South of Market Health Center was organized in 1973 by a group of concerned citizens with the help of the San Francisco Department of Public Health. It provides a comprehensive health service program designed to meet the health care needs of a low-income inner-city population with dignity, compassion and cultural sensitivity. Continuing to provide quality services, a renovation of the health center provided the needed security and privacy regulations required by federal law, as well as upgraded laboratory and exam rooms and equipment.

The ground floor medical clinic reception area was completely revamped. The redesign of the front desk accommodates computer terminals and increased filing and storage capacity. Low security doors give staff control over admittance into the patient area while maintaining visual connections between spaces.

The second floor dental and women’s clinic received similar enhancements. A brand new reception desk and office was created out of an unused office. The reorganization of the dental exam and lab rooms provided accessibility, while the new equipment and finishes modernized their usability and appearance.

In all areas of renovation, finishes were redone to give a warmer, more welcoming feel to the health center as a whole.
